Airline travel with Firearms
America West
Allows passengers to transport firearms in accordance with Federal Law. The
following conditions must be met:
Items of shooting equipment will be accepted as checked baggage only.
A passenger who presents baggage containing a firearm must declare and
demonstrate that the weapon is unloaded.
All firearms must be in a hard-sided container for transport and the container
locked. A Firearm Unloaded Declaration form must be signed and placed inside the
bag or gun case. Ammunition must be packed in the original manufacturing package
or metal/wood box, with a maximum of 11 pounds per passenger.
The number of firearms is limited to Not more than two rifles, with or without
scopes, one shooting mat, noise suppressors, and small rifle tools or Two
shotguns and two shotgun cases or One pistol case containing not more than five
pistols; noise suppressors, one pistol telescope, and small pistol tools or One
bow and quiver of arrows and maintenance kit enclosed in a container of
sufficient strength to protect the bow and quiver with arrows from damage.
Continental Airlines
Firearms
Continental accepts one item of shooting equipment per customer in lieu of one
piece of free baggage. All items must be properly encased in a suitable
container. One item of shooting equipment, whether presented in a single
container or not, is defined as one of the following:
Rifles - 1 rifle case containing not more than 2 rifles (with or without
scopes), 11 pounds of ammunition, 1 shooting mat, noise suppressor and small
rifle tools.
Shotguns - 1 shotgun case containing not more than 2 shotguns and 11 pounds of
ammunition.
Pistols - 1 pistol case containing not more than 5 pistols, 1 pistol telescope,
noise suppresser and small pistol tools.
The following are firearm restrictions:
Firearms are not accepted to/from Israel.
Curbside check-in of a firearm is not permitted.
Customer must demonstrate in an isolated area that the firearm is unloaded.
The firearm must be packaged in a hard-sided container capable of being locked.
The container must be locked and the key or combination must remain in the
customer's possession. If a hard-sided container is needed, see the container
section of this site.
For travel to/from the United Kingdom, pistols, rifles and shotguns must be
packed in a hard side rifle case.
The firearm will be transported in a section of the aircraft that is
inaccessible to the customer. Proof of registration is not required.
Firearms carried in addition to the free baggage allowance will be assessed at
the current excess baggage charge.
No more than 11 pounds of ammunition may be carried. Ammunition must be packed
in the manufacturer's original package or securely packed in fiber, wood or
metal containers. The ammunition inside the container must be protected against
shock and secured against movement. The ammunition may be packed in the same
container as the firearm or in a separate container.
For domestic travel, no more than 11 pounds of ammunition may be carried. The
ammunition may be packed in the same container as the firearm or in a separate
container.
NOTE: Continental employees will not physically handle any firearm during the
inspection. After inspection has been completed, the customer must sign a
Firearm Declaration Tag.
North West
Guns, Firearms
Carry-on:
NW/KLM does not accept guns or firearms of any kind in carry-on luggage.
Checked:
NWA accepts handguns/BB guns/rifle/shotgun type firearms only as checked
luggage, with certain limitations and requirements.
KLM accepts sports guns only, handguns are not accepted.
Passenger must obtain and comply with regulations governing the transportation
of firearms for all countries on the itinerary.
All firearms must be in a suitable container/crush proof container manufactured
specifically for firearms or in a hard sided suitcase.
Passenger must verbally declare firearm is unloaded. NW requires firearm
unloaded tag be signed by passenger. Tag must be placed inside of luggage
containing firearm. No exterior tag nor notice of firearm may appear on case.
Case must be locked and only the passenger may retain the key or combination.
NW/KLM personnel will not unload or handle firearms. Gun and ammunition may be
in the same piece of luggage. However, ammunition must be within its own
packaging.
International shipment of arms/ammunition:
Passengers must obtain and comply with regulations governing the transportation
of firearms for all countries on the itinerary.
Passengers should check with Northwest or KLM for current policies, requirements
and restrictions on firearms and related items in checked luggage when traveling
in the U.S. or internationally.
United
Firearms
Federal regulations require that firearms in checked baggage or in their own
shipping case be unloaded and declared. Firearms are not allowed in carry-on
bags. Firearms in checked baggage must be packed in a hard-sided bag or gun
case. A maximum of 11 lbs. of small arms ammunition is allowed in checked
luggage and must be packed separately from the firearm in the original
manufacturer's box or securely packed in a fiber, wood, or metal box to prevent
movement of cartridges.
Delta
Shooting Equipment
One item of shooting equipment is accepted as part of a customer's free checked
baggage allowance. For each item listed, one item of shooting equipment is
defined as one or a combination of the following:
Rifles
One rifle case containing:
two or fewer rifles (with or without scopes)
one shooting mat
one small pistol tool kit
noise suppressers
11 lbs. of ammunition
Cases containing more than two rifles will be assessed an excess baggage charge
Shotguns
two shotguns
two shotgun cases
11 lbs. of ammunition
Cases containing more than two shotguns will be assessed an excess baggage
charge.
Pistols
One pistol case containing:
two pistols
pistol telescopes
noise suppressers
a small pistol tool case
11 lbs. of ammunition
Cases containing more than two pistols will be assessed an excess baggage
charge.
You may purchase a hard-sided case (12" x 52" x 4 1/2") with suitcase type lock
(capable of holding two rifles with scopes) for $75 plus local tax at most Delta
Airport Ticket Counters.
When checking a firearm, you must:
declare to the Delta representative that they are checking a firearm (If a
Security Checkpoint is prior to the Delta ticket counter, you must declare the
existence of a firearm to security personnel.)
present firearm(s) unloaded and sign a "Firearms Unloaded" declaration
lock the firearm(s) in a hard-sided, crush-proof container and retain the key or
combination
maintain entry permits in your possession for the country or countries of
destination or transit
ensure small arms ammunition is packed in the manufacturer's original package or
securely packed in fiber, wood or metal boxes
Note: Firearms transported to the United Kingdom as checked baggage require a
permit from the United Kingdom. The passenger must contact the United Kingdom
for more information regarding this permit.
Ammunition in excess of 11 lbs. per passenger or that contains incendiary
projectiles is prohibited.
AirTran
Shooting equipment - one (1) gun and case, ten (10) pounds of ammunition.
Note: If the above listed equipment is in addition to the free baggage
allowance, an excess baggage charge of $50.00 per piece must be assessed.
Sporting equipment not included in the free baggage allowance are bicycles and
scuba gear. Both have acceptance limitations and will be assessed an excess
baggage charge of $65.00 for either.
South West
Guns may be transported only as checked baggage. All firearms must be unloaded
and presented for inspection by Southwest. A Firearms Inspection Tag will be
affixed. The luggage or other container in which a handgun is transported must
be locked. Other firearms must be encased in a container manufactured for the
transportation of firearms and of sufficient strength to withstand normal
handling and prevent damage to the weapon during transport. If no suitable
container is available, Southwest has heavy cardboard rifle and shotgun
transporter boxes for sale. Southwest assumes no liability for the misalignment
of sights on firearms.
Each Southwest Customer is allowed to carry ammunition in checked luggage, up to
the maximum amounts shown below:
Pistol or rimfire....................................300 rounds
Rifle...................................................120 rounds
Shotshell............................................150 rounds
The total quantity of ammunition cannot exceed 11 lbs. per customer.
Ammunition must be contained in the manufacturer's original container or an
equivalent that is sturdy and durable and provides for sufficient cartridge
separation. Southwest prohibits ammunition from being carried, in any amount, in
the aircraft cabin.
Alaska Air
Shooting equipment (sporting firearms): Firearms will be included in determining
the free baggage allowance, and when in excess, each item will be subject to the
excess baggage charge for a single piece, whether or not presented as a single
piece. One item of shooting equipment is defined as (1) one rifle case
containing not more than two rifles, with or without scopes, one shooting mat,
noise suppressors, and small rifle tools; or (2) two shotguns and two shotgun
cases; or (3) one pistol case containing not more than five pistols or noise
suppressors, one pistol telescope, and small pistol tools; (4) up to 50 lb. Of
small arms ammunition in addition to 1), 2), and 3) above. Exception 1: Rifles
or shotguns being transported for sporting purposes may be placed in suitable
soft-sided container. Conditions of acceptance:
Firearms must be unloaded and packed in (1) a manufacturer's crush-proof type
container, manufactured specifically for the firearm; or (2) a hard case.
Baggage containing hand guns must be locked by the passenger in the presence of
Alaska with either a key or lock combination to be retained in the passenger's
custody. Baggage containing firearms will be transported in an area, other than
the cockpit, that is inaccessible to the passenger.
Baggage containing firearms will not knowingly be accepted for transportation at
point of origin or at an online or interline connecting point unless a
declaration, signed and dated on the day the baggage is accepted for
transportation, is placed inside the case containing the firearms, declaring
that the firearms are not loaded.
Ammunition must be packed in manufacturer's original package or securely packed
in fiber, wood, or metal boxes. Ammunition with explosive or incendiary
projectiles will not be accepted.
